The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has taken an unprecedented step by releasing the provisional answer key for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 immediately after the completion of the exam. The answer key has been made available on the official UPSC website, and candidates can submit objections until May 31, 2026.
The move comes amid growing criticism from aspirants regarding the nature of this year’s examination. Many candidates have expressed concerns about the changing pattern of questions, the declining quality of language used in the paper, and issues related to maintaining equal opportunities for all aspirants. As the controversy gained momentum, UPSC decided to release the provisional answer key to provide greater transparency and clarity.
The Civil Services Preliminary Examination, often referred to as the country's most prestigious competitive examination, was conducted in its traditional two-paper format. The examination included General Studies (GS Paper-I) and the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). However, shortly after the exam concluded, social media platforms and student forums witnessed widespread discussions questioning the difficulty level and overall structure of the paper.
Responding to the growing debate, UPSC Chairman **Ajay Kumar** addressed the issue through a post on LinkedIn. He acknowledged that the 2026 preliminary examination was challenging for many aspirants. According to him, the official provisional answer key would help remove confusion and provide candidates with a reliable reference for evaluating their performance.
The Chairman further explained that most answers in the provisional key were based on authentic and verifiable sources, including government publications, official websites, government press releases, standard textbooks, and reputed newspapers that candidates commonly use during preparation. He also encouraged aspirants to submit feedback or objections through the Commission’s official QPRep portal if they believe any answer requires review or correction.
The release of a provisional answer key immediately after the examination marks a significant change in UPSC’s approach. Traditionally, answer keys are published only after the entire selection process is completed. Therefore, this decision is being viewed as an important step toward increasing transparency and addressing concerns raised by candidates.
Meanwhile, the next stage of the recruitment process is set to begin soon. The UPSC Civil Services Main Examination 2026 is scheduled to commence on August 21, 2026. Candidates who successfully qualify in the preliminary examination will be eligible to appear for the Mains. The personality test and interview rounds for shortlisted candidates are expected to take place between January and April 2027.
With the answer key now available and the objection window open, aspirants are closely analyzing their performance while preparing for the crucial Mains examination ahead.
