Karnataka’s political landscape has witnessed a major shift as the Congress party has officially resolved its long-standing leadership question. Senior party leader and current Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has been chosen as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka, marking a significant turning point in the state’s governance. The decision was taken unanimously during a Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting held in Bengaluru, ending months of speculation about a possible leadership change.
According to the developments, Shivakumar will take oath as Chief Minister on June 3. The announcement comes after growing discussions within the party regarding a transition of power, which had been circulating for several months. As part of this transition, outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has stepped down, formally paving the way for the new leadership structure in the state.
The crucial CLP meeting took place at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru and was closely monitored by senior Congress central leaders, including K. C. Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala, who were sent by the party high command to oversee the proceedings. Their presence highlighted the importance of the leadership decision and the need for a smooth consensus within the party.
During the meeting, several key resolutions were passed. First, a proposal was adopted to delegate the authority of selecting the new legislature party leader to the Congress central leadership. This motion was initiated by Siddaramaiah and supported by Deputy Chief Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara. It was unanimously approved by all MLAs present.
Following this, Siddaramaiah himself proposed D. K. Shivakumar’s name for the post of CLP leader. This proposal was again supported by Dr. Parameshwara, and it received unanimous approval from all party legislators. As a result, Shivakumar was formally elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party, making him the next Chief Minister of Karnataka.
In a gesture of unity and respect, Shivakumar later moved a proposal acknowledging Siddaramaiah’s leadership and contributions to the government and the party. This was seen as an effort to maintain harmony within the party after the leadership transition.
An interesting development during the meeting was a brief closed-door discussion involving Siddaramaiah, K. C. Venugopal, and Randeep Singh Surjewala. After this discussion, the meeting resumed, and the final consensus on Shivakumar’s leadership was reached smoothly.
Earlier, Siddaramaiah had submitted his resignation as Chief Minister, which was accepted by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Friday. Along with his resignation, the entire state cabinet was also dissolved, officially ending the current government’s tenure and initiating the process for forming a new administration.
With this decision, Congress has brought clarity to Karnataka’s leadership structure, officially placing D. K. Shivakumar at the helm of the state’s next government.
