Several countries across Europe are facing an intense heatwave, with temperatures reaching record highs and raising serious health concerns. France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Britain are among the worst-affected nations as scorching temperatures continue to sweep across the continent.
France has reported 18 heat-related deaths so far. Among the victims were two young children, aged 2 and 4, who tragically died after being found unconscious inside an overheated family car in southeastern France. Despite efforts by doctors to save them, both children could not survive.
The heat has pushed temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in many French cities. Bordeaux recorded 41.9°C, Poitiers reached 41.2°C, Rennes touched 40.6°C, and Angers registered 40.9°C. The city of Saintes experienced temperatures as high as 42°C, while Poitiers broke a weather record that had stood since 1947. In Paris, temperatures climbed to 38.4°C, with forecasts suggesting the capital could cross the 40°C mark in the coming days.
The heatwave is also affecting other parts of Europe. Spain's northern city of San Sebastian, usually known for its mild weather, is expected to hit 40°C. Britain could see temperatures of up to 39°C, exceeding its previous June record. Meanwhile, Italy has issued red alerts in 12 cities due to the extreme conditions.
According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Europe is warming nearly twice as fast as the global average. Experts warn that climate change is making heatwaves more frequent and severe, posing increasing risks to human health and daily life.
