Indian cricket captain and star batsman Rohit Sharma has been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri, the country's fourth-highest civilian honour. President Droupadi Murmu presented the award to Rohit during a special ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday. He received the honour for his exceptional contribution to Indian cricket, remarkable leadership, and for bringing glory to the nation on the international stage. The last few years have been particularly successful for Rohit Sharma. Under his captaincy, Team India lifted the 2024 T20 World Cup, ending a 17-year wait for the title. The team followed it up with another major triumph by winning the Champions Trophy in 2025. With two consecutive ICC trophies as captain, Rohit has established himself among India's most successful leaders. Apart from Rohit, several other sports personalities were also recognised at the Padma Awards. Tennis legend Vijay Amritraj received the Padma Bhushan, while Indian women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur, para-athlete Praveen Kumar, and traditional martial arts expert K. Panjanivel were honoured with the Padma Shri. Rohit Sharma's achievements are not limited to captaincy. He played a crucial role in India's run to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he scored 597 runs. His memorable performance in the 2019 ODI World Cup, where he smashed a record five centuries and scored 648 runs, remains one of the finest campaigns in tournament history. With the Padma Shri added to his list of achievements, Rohit Sharma has further cemented his legacy as one of India's greatest cricketers and an inspiration to millions of fans around the world.
