India-Russia Supreme Court Pact: Three Key Areas of Cooperation Explained
A significant agreement has been signed between the Supreme Courts of India and Russia to enhance judicial cooperation between the two countries. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, who is currently visiting Moscow, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Russia, Igor Krasnov. This is the first agreement of its kind between the highest courts of India and Russia. The MoU aims to promote cooperation in several areas, including the exchange of judicial experiences, the use of modern technology in courts, and the professional training and development of judicial officers and staff. The agreement is expected to help both countries strengthen their judicial institutions and improve the efficiency of the justice delivery system. During the meeting, CJI Surya Kant said that administering justice in large and diverse countries like India and Russia is a major responsibility. He pointed out that despite differences in legal traditions and historical backgrounds, both nations face similar challenges, such as maintaining public confidence in the judiciary and adapting to rapidly changing times. Highlighting India's digital transformation in the judicial sector, the Chief Justice said that technology is being used to improve access to justice rather than change its basic principles. He mentioned that initiatives such as e-filing, virtual hearings, digitization of records, AI-based translation services, and virtual judicial assistance are being continuously expanded across Indian courts. Under the agreement, both countries will mainly focus on three areas: sharing judicial experiences, promoting the use of information technology in courts, and enhancing the training and professional development of judicial personnel. The move is expected to further strengthen legal and judicial ties between India and Russia.
