The biographical film *Michael*, based on the life of Michael Jackson, has made a powerful impact at the global box office, quickly emerging as one of the biggest releases of 2026. Within just a few days of its release, the film crossed the $100 million mark in North America and surpassed $225 million worldwide, positioning itself as the sixth-highest-grossing film of the year so far.
Starring Jaafar Jackson in the lead role, the film opened to impressive numbers. It earned around $13 million from paid previews and went on to collect $97 million during its opening weekend in the US and Canada—setting a new record for the biggest debut ever for a biopic. This opening exceeded the performances of notable films like Oppenheimer and Bohemian Rhapsody, both of which had lower opening weekend figures. By Monday, the film added another $7.67 million domestically, pushing its North American total past $104 million.
Internationally, *Michael* has performed even more strongly. In its first four days, it brought in approximately $122 million from overseas markets, with Europe contributing significantly. This pushed its global total to an estimated $226 million. Industry experts suggest the film has strong momentum and could potentially reach the $1 billion milestone, which would make it the highest-grossing film of the year—surpassing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie—and also the first biopic to achieve that feat, beating *Bohemian Rhapsody*’s $918 million lifetime earnings.
The film has already overtaken the worldwide totals of several recent releases, including Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Scream 7. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, *Michael* also features a supporting cast including Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo.
The film traces Michael Jackson’s journey from his early days in Gary, Indiana, and his rise with the Jackson 5, to his global superstardom fueled by landmark albums like *Off the Wall* and *Thriller*.
