Jabalpur Boat Accident: Yellow Alert Ignored, Safety Jackets Kept Below Deck
The boat tragedy at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur has raised serious questions about safety lapses and negligence. Survivors of the capsized tourist vessel, *Narmada Queen*, claim it was allowed to sail despite a weather warning issued earlier that day. The accident, which occurred on Thursday evening, has so far claimed at least nine lives, with several others still missing. According to eyewitness accounts, the boat carried more passengers than officially recorded. While authorities stated that 29 tickets were issued, locals alleged that additional passengers boarded as it was the final trip of the day. The vessel, operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department, had been in service since 2006. The India Meteorological Department had issued a yellow alert warning of thunderstorms and strong winds, with gusts reaching 40–50 km/h. Despite this, the boat proceeded into the reservoir. Survivors reported that life jackets were not distributed before departure and were instead stored below deck. When the weather suddenly worsened mid-journey, passengers scrambled to access them, leading to panic and chaos. Some survivors alleged that the crew failed to manage the emergency properly, and one even claimed that the pilot and crew abandoned the vessel before it capsized—an accusation denied by the pilot. Witnesses on the shore said they had warned the helmsman to return as weather conditions deteriorated, but their warnings were ignored. Rescue efforts began late in the evening, with the State Disaster Response Force arriving after dark. Divers and local responders worked through the night to recover bodies and search for the missing. By Friday evening, several victims had been recovered, but families continued to wait anxiously for news of their loved ones. While officials maintain the boat was well-maintained, the incident has exposed critical gaps in safety protocols, raising urgent concerns about accountability and enforcement in tourist operations.
