A powerful explosion at a fireworks factory in China has killed at least 21 people and injured 61 others, according to Chinese state media. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon at around 4:43 PM in Liuyang city, located in Hunan province, a region widely known for its fireworks manufacturing industry.
The blast took place at the Liuyang Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company. Witnesses and circulating videos on Chinese social media showed a massive plume of smoke rising into the sky, followed by repeated secondary explosions that intensified the destruction. The factory is situated in a rural, mountainous area, and footage from the scene also showed damaged buildings, scattered debris, and emergency responders working urgently amid the wreckage.
Although the videos have gone viral online, authorities have not yet independently verified all circulating footage. However, state broadcaster reports confirmed the severity of the explosion and the significant loss of life and injuries.
Following the incident, Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered an immediate investigation into the cause of the explosion. He also instructed local authorities to strengthen safety inspections across high-risk industries, improve disaster prevention systems, and ensure stronger protection of public safety and property.
Emergency response teams, including firefighters, rescue workers, and medical personnel, were quickly deployed to the site. Rescue operations continued for hours as authorities searched for survivors and controlled remaining hazards at the factory.
Liuyang is one of China’s most important fireworks production hubs, supplying a major share of the country’s fireworks industry. Reports indicate that the city produces around 60% of fireworks sold domestically in China and approximately 70% of those exported internationally. This makes safety compliance in the region especially critical due to the scale of production and handling of explosive materials.
Unfortunately, this is not the first such incident in the region. Last year, another fireworks factory explosion in Hunan province resulted in nine deaths. Similar accidents have also been reported in other Chinese provinces, including incidents in Hubei and Jiangsu earlier this year, which collectively claimed multiple lives.
The latest tragedy has once again raised serious concerns about industrial safety standards in fireworks manufacturing facilities, especially in high-production zones like Liuyang. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause and whether safety violations contributed to the explosion.
