A major legal development has put Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor-turned-politician Vijay in the spotlight, as the Madras High Court has reportedly ordered the registration of an FIR against him in connection with alleged income tax irregularities. The court’s directive comes at a politically sensitive moment, just as Vijay’s party has claimed a strong electoral performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and he is being projected as a potential chief ministerial candidate.
According to the details mentioned in the petition, the case is linked to the 2015 Tamil film Puli. The allegations primarily revolve around financial transactions related to the movie, including claims of unaccounted cash payments and discrepancies in income reporting. The petition argues that certain payments made to Vijay by the film’s producers were not fully and transparently accounted for under tax regulations.
The Madras High Court registry initially hesitated to number the petition, but later developments led to judicial intervention. A bench reportedly directed the registry to proceed with numbering the case, subject to considerations of maintainability. This procedural step has now paved the way for a formal hearing on the matter in the near future.
The petition further alleges that Vijay received a significant portion of his remuneration for Puli through both cheque and cash transactions. It is claimed that while tax deductions were made for payments routed through banking channels, cash components were not properly subjected to TDS compliance. During earlier income tax investigations, it is also alleged that Vijay acknowledged receiving cash payments and expressed willingness to pay applicable taxes on the amount.
Additionally, the documents referenced in the case suggest that Vijay had voluntarily disclosed additional income for the financial year 2015–16, reportedly amounting to several crores, and later filed revised income tax returns for 2016–17, declaring total income exceeding ₹35 crore. Deductions were also claimed under depreciation and expenses linked to fan club activities.
While these are currently allegations under judicial review, the court’s order for FIR registration has added legal pressure on the TVK leader at a crucial political juncture. As the case progresses, it is expected to draw significant public and political attention, especially given Vijay’s growing influence in Tamil Nadu politics and his transition from cinema to public leadership.
The matter remains under legal scrutiny, and further proceedings will determine the validity of the allegations and any subsequent action.
