Rising fuel and gas prices have delivered another inflation shock to people across India. After petrol and diesel prices were increased, CNG prices have also gone up in several cities, including Delhi and Mumbai. In Delhi, the price of CNG has increased by ₹2 per kilogram, taking the new rate to ₹79.09 per kg. Similar hikes have been seen across NCR cities such as Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram. Mumbai also witnessed a ₹2 rise in CNG prices, with the revised rates coming into effect from May 14.
The latest increase comes amid growing concerns over global crude oil and gas supplies due to tensions and conflict in the Middle East. According to reports, disruptions in oil and gas supply from Gulf countries have pushed international energy prices higher. As a result, India is being forced to purchase fuel at more expensive rates, increasing pressure on the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
Within just 72 hours of Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging citizens to conserve petrol and diesel and avoid unnecessary gold purchases, prices of essential commodities, fuel, and precious metals have surged sharply. Oil companies have now raised petrol prices by up to ₹3.14 per litre and diesel prices by around ₹3.11 per litre after nearly two years without major hikes.
In Delhi, petrol prices have increased from ₹94.77 to ₹97.77 per litre, while diesel prices have crossed ₹90 per litre. Other metro cities including Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai have also witnessed notable increases in fuel rates.
The CNG price hike has affected several cities across North India. Cities like Kanpur, Meerut, Ajmer, Gurugram, and Greater Noida are now seeing significantly higher CNG rates, adding to transportation and daily commuting costs for citizens.
The combined rise in petrol, diesel, and CNG prices is expected to impact household budgets, transportation expenses, and overall inflation in the coming weeks.
