Delhi is taking a major step toward cleaner and smarter public transportation with the launch of its first hydrogen-powered shuttle bus service. Starting today, the new buses operated by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will provide last-mile connectivity between the Central Secretariat, Seva Tirtha Metro Station, and key government offices located in the Central Vista area.
The initiative aims to encourage government employees and commuters to use public transport instead of private vehicles. Hydrogen fuel cell technology is considered one of the clean transportation solutions of the future because it produces significantly lower emissions compared to traditional diesel-powered buses. Officials believe the project will help reduce pollution levels in the capital while supporting India’s growing focus on green mobility.
According to DMRC, the project has been launched in partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Ministry of Petroleum. Indian Oil Corporation Limited has provided two advanced hydrogen-fueled buses for the service. These buses are designed to offer a modern, eco-friendly, and comfortable travel experience for passengers.
The shuttle buses will mainly serve employees working in government offices around Central Vista. After arriving at metro stations, passengers will be able to quickly reach offices and nearby destinations without depending on private transportation. The buses will operate from Monday to Friday, except on gazetted holidays.
The service timings are divided into two slots: from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Buses will be available every 30 minutes, ensuring convenient travel during office hours.
The route will cover several important landmarks and government buildings, including Kartavya Bhawan, Vigyan Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, Akbar Road, Baroda House, National Stadium, the National Gallery of Modern Art, India Gate, and Seva Tirtha Metro Station.
Fares for the hydrogen shuttle buses have been fixed at Rs 10 and Rs 15, making the service affordable for daily commuters. Passengers can pay through the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), UPI, or cash. DMRC will manage bus operations, ticketing, conductors, and passenger assistance as part of the project.
With this launch, Delhi joins the growing list of cities exploring hydrogen-based public transport systems to build a cleaner and more sustainable urban future.
