PM Modi Clears Air on Foreign Travel Tax Rumors Amid Fuel Crisis Concerns
Amid growing speculation over a possible government move to impose taxes or restrictions on international travel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly denied the claims on Friday. Addressing reports circulating in the media, PM Modi stated that there was “no truth at all” in suggestions that the government was planning to levy a tax or surcharge on foreign travel. The controversy began after a media report claimed that the Indian government was considering a temporary tax on overseas travel due to rising financial pressure caused by the ongoing fuel crisis linked to tensions in West Asia. According to the report, officials were allegedly discussing measures to manage the impact of increasing crude oil prices and higher import costs. It also suggested that the proposed levy could help the government deal with war-related economic challenges. However, the claims were based on unnamed sources and had not been officially confirmed. Reacting quickly to the report, PM Modi dismissed the speculation and reassured citizens that the government has no intention of restricting foreign travel. He emphasized that the administration remains focused on improving both the “ease of doing business” and the “ease of living” for people across the country. His statement was seen as a direct attempt to stop rumors and prevent unnecessary concern among travelers and businesses. Following the Prime Minister’s clarification, the media organization that published the report withdrew the story and issued a public apology. CNBC-TV18 admitted that its report about a possible tax or cess on foreign travel was inaccurate. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the channel stated that it regretted the error and officially retracted the news. The issue surfaced at a time when inflation concerns are already rising in India. Prices of fuel products such as petrol, diesel, and CNG have increased sharply, while the costs of gold, silver, and several essential goods have also gone up. These developments have added to public anxiety over the economy, making rumors about additional taxes especially sensitive. PM Modi’s statement has now clarified the government’s position, putting an end to speculation surrounding foreign travel restrictions and new travel-related taxes.
