The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced a significant operational change aimed at improving public transport capacity and supporting national energy-saving efforts. Starting from 18 May 2026, Delhi Metro will operate 24 additional train trips every Monday across its network. This decision comes in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to citizens to reduce the use of petrol and diesel and shift towards public transportation.
According to DMRC officials, the move is designed to encourage more commuters in the National Capital Region (NCR) to use the metro system, especially as energy conservation becomes increasingly important due to ongoing fuel concerns in the country. The additional services will initially be introduced only on Mondays, which the Delhi government has also designated as “Metro Day” under the “My India, My Partnership” campaign. This initiative aims to promote sustainable travel habits among citizens.
The extra services will be operated using six additional trains, contributing a total of 24 extra trips each Monday. However, DMRC has also clarified that this arrangement is flexible. If passenger demand increases on other days of the week, additional train services may be introduced accordingly in the future.
To ensure smooth operations and passenger safety, DMRC is also strengthening station-level infrastructure. Additional security personnel will be deployed at busy stations, and more ticket counters will be opened to reduce waiting times. The corporation is also installing modern security systems, including upgraded door frame metal detectors (DFMD) and advanced baggage screening machines. These measures are intended to improve passenger flow, reduce congestion during peak hours, and enhance overall security across the network.
DMRC noted that the Delhi Metro continues to play a crucial role in connecting major commercial hubs, government offices, corporate districts, educational institutions, and tourist destinations across Delhi-NCR. It also offers seamless multimodal connectivity with ISBT terminals, airports, RRTS corridors, and metro systems in nearby cities such as Noida and Gurugram.
In addition to expanding train services, DMRC is also focusing on improving last-mile connectivity. A network has already been developed at around 160 metro stations, benefiting nearly 100,000 passengers daily. This system includes e-autos, e-rickshaws, bike taxis, cab services, and bicycle-sharing options. Through the Saarthi app, commuters can also access integrated door-to-door journey planning, making travel more convenient and efficient.
Overall, this initiative reflects DMRC’s effort to enhance public transport capacity, support environmental goals, and provide a smoother commuting experience for Delhi-NCR residents.
