Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Sweden on Sunday after completing his visit to the Netherlands, marking his first trip to the Nordic nation in eight years. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson personally welcomed Modi at Gothenburg Airport, highlighting the importance Sweden places on strengthening ties with India. Adding to the ceremonial reception, Swedish fighter jets escorted Modi’s aircraft after it entered Swedish airspace, creating a grand and symbolic welcome for the Indian Prime Minister.
This visit is being seen as a major step toward deepening India-Sweden relations across several strategic sectors, including trade, innovation, green technology, artificial intelligence, defense manufacturing, and climate cooperation. Prime Minister Modi had last visited Sweden in 2018 for the first-ever India-Nordic Summit, and this latest visit aims to build upon the progress achieved since then.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Kristersson are expected to hold extensive bilateral discussions covering all aspects of India-Sweden cooperation. The talks will focus on expanding partnerships in future-oriented sectors such as emerging technologies, startups, sustainable industries, robust supply chains, and space collaboration. Both nations are also expected to discuss stronger people-to-people ties and global climate initiatives.
Trade and investment are likely to be key topics during the discussions. Bilateral trade between India and Sweden has reportedly reached around $7.75 billion, while Swedish foreign direct investment in India has touched approximately $2.825 billion between 2000 and 2025. Officials believe there is significant potential for further growth, especially as India continues to expand its manufacturing and technology sectors.
A major highlight of the visit will be Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the European Roundtable for Industry alongside Prime Minister Kristersson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The forum brings together top European business leaders and is expected to focus on innovation, industrial cooperation, and economic partnerships.
Sweden is widely recognized as one of Europe’s most innovation-driven economies, and both countries are looking to strengthen strategic cooperation in advanced and sustainable industries. Modi’s visit is expected to further reinforce India’s engagement with Europe while opening new opportunities for investment, technology sharing, and long-term economic collaboration between the two nations.
