The Falta Assembly constituency in West Bengal has turned into one of the most closely watched political battlegrounds in the state ahead of the re-poll scheduled for May 21. The Election Commission ordered fresh voting after allegations of violence and irregularities during the earlier polling held on April 29. With only a short time left for campaigning, political tensions in the region have reached a peak.
Falta, located in the politically significant Diamond Harbour region, has long been considered a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The constituency has remained under TMC control since 2011, and in the 2021 Assembly election, the party secured victory by a margin of nearly 40,000 votes. Before the rise of the TMC, the seat was dominated by the Left Front for almost three decades.
This time, however, the political atmosphere has changed dramatically. The main contest is between TMC candidate Jahangir Khan and BJP candidate Devangshu Pandey. Jahangir Khan, who is believed to be close to TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, has become the central figure of the election campaign. The BJP is aggressively trying to break the TMC’s long-standing dominance in the constituency.
The campaign has gained even more attention because of the sharp exchange of words between political leaders and officials. The Election Commission appointed IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma, popularly known for his tough image in Uttar Pradesh, as an observer for the re-poll. During a rally, Jahangir Khan challenged him publicly by comparing himself to the movie character “Pushpa,” saying he would never bow down.
At the same time, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari launched a strong attack on Khan, warning voters against what he described as years of fear-driven politics in Falta. He urged people to vote freely and support the BJP in large numbers. The BJP believes the changing political environment gives it a real opportunity to capture the seat.
The constituency’s large minority and Dalit voter base has traditionally supported the TMC, making the final outcome difficult to predict. Political analysts believe the May 24 result will show whether Jahangir Khan’s popularity can hold the TMC fortress together or whether the BJP’s aggressive campaign can finally create a breakthrough in Falta.
