Shubhendu Adhikari Government Opens Door for Action in RG Kar Case
A major development has emerged in the highly controversial RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case in West Bengal. The state government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has approved legal proceedings against former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh in connection with alleged money laundering and administrative irregularities linked to the case. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the decision through a post on social media platform X. He stated that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has received official permission to initiate legal action against Sandip Ghosh, who was serving as the superintendent and administrative head of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital at the time of the incident. Adhikari described the move as an important and constructive step toward ensuring justice in one of Bengal’s most shocking criminal cases. In his statement, Adhikari accused the previous Trinamool Congress government of delaying and obstructing the investigation process for an extended period. According to him, the earlier administration failed to conduct a transparent probe into the brutal rape and murder that took place inside the hospital premises on August 9, 2024. He emphasized that no individual is above the law and said the state government is committed to identifying every person involved in the case. The Chief Minister further said that the truth surrounding the incident cannot remain hidden forever. He stressed that the people of West Bengal deserve justice and assured that all those found guilty would face the strictest possible punishment under the law. Adhikari also confirmed that the ED has now been empowered to continue legal proceedings against Sandip Ghosh and seek his prosecution through proper judicial channels. The RG Kar Medical College case had shocked the entire nation after a 31-year-old trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered inside the hospital’s seminar hall in Kolkata. Her body was discovered on the hospital campus, leading to widespread outrage and protests across the country. Soon after the incident, Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civil volunteer, as the prime accused in the case. The tragedy triggered massive protests by doctors and medical professionals in Kolkata and several other parts of India. Doctors at major government hospitals reportedly stayed away from work for more than 40 days, demanding justice and stronger safety measures for healthcare workers. Due to mounting public pressure, the Kolkata High Court later ordered a CBI investigation into the case. In January 2025, the accused Sanjay Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment by the court. However, investigations into other possible irregularities and administrative failures linked to the case are still continuing, with the latest action against former principal Sandip Ghosh now becoming a major political and legal development in West Bengal.
