PM Modi’s Norway Event Sparks Debate on Press Freedom and Accountability
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Norway has triggered a major political controversy after he declined to answer questions from journalists during a joint press interaction with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store. The issue gained attention after Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng attempted to ask questions related to human rights and media freedom in India. PM Modi is currently on a five-nation foreign tour and had already visited the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, and Sweden before arriving in Norway. During the Norway press conference, PM Modi delivered a joint statement but left without taking media questions. A video of the moment quickly spread on social media, leading to sharp criticism from opposition leaders and journalists. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the Prime Minister, claiming that avoiding difficult questions damages India’s global image. In a social media post, Rahul Gandhi said that a leader with nothing to hide should not fear answering questions from the press. His remarks intensified the political debate in India. Journalist Helle Lyng also expressed disappointment publicly. Sharing a video online, she said she had not expected PM Modi to avoid media questions. She highlighted Norway’s strong ranking in the global press freedom index and stated that questioning world leaders is part of a journalist’s responsibility. Following the controversy, India’s Ministry of External Affairs invited the journalist to attend a separate media briefing organized by the Indian Embassy in Oslo. During the briefing, she again raised questions about human rights, press freedom, and whether Indian leaders would answer challenging questions from journalists in the future. Responding on behalf of the Indian government, senior diplomat Sibi George defended India’s democratic system. He stated that India is a strong democracy with constitutional protections, equal rights for women, and an independent judiciary where citizens can seek justice if rights are violated. He also emphasized India’s global contributions, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The exchange became tense when the journalist repeatedly sought direct answers. Sibi George responded that India’s media environment is vast and vibrant, with hundreds of television channels and continuous public debate. He also criticized some foreign reports and NGOs for presenting what he described as an incomplete understanding of India. Later, Helle Lyng clarified on social media that she is an independent Norwegian journalist and not connected to any foreign government. She said her questions were part of her professional duty as a reporter. The incident has since sparked widespread discussion online about media freedom, diplomacy, and political accountability.
