India-Pakistan War of Words Intensifies After Army Chief’s Tough Warning
Tensions between India and Pakistan have once again intensified after strong remarks from both sides regarding security, terrorism, and military strategy. The latest controversy began after Indian Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi issued a stern warning to Pakistan during an event at the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi. He stated that if Pakistan continues to support terrorism and carry out anti-India activities, it would have to decide whether it wants to remain part of “geography or history.” His statement quickly drew a sharp reaction from Pakistan. Responding to the Indian Army Chief’s remarks, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif issued a strong warning to India during an interview with a Pakistani television channel. Asif claimed that if India attempted any aggressive action against Pakistan, it would itself become history. He also warned that Pakistan could alter India’s geography, escalating the already tense rhetoric between the two neighboring countries. During the interview, Khawaja Asif referred to the military tensions between India and Pakistan that took place last year. He claimed that Pakistan had responded firmly at the time and alleged that India suffered reputational damage during the confrontation. Asif further accused the Indian Army Chief of attempting to restore his lost image through aggressive statements. The Pakistani minister also commented on remarks made by Dattatreya Hosabale of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, who had suggested that the possibility of dialogue between India and Pakistan still exists. Asif argued that India’s military establishment and civil society appear divided on issues related to Pakistan and regional diplomacy. Apart from security concerns, Khawaja Asif questioned India’s foreign policy and claimed that India’s relations with neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka are no longer as strong as before. He also criticized India’s strategic relationship with Israel, alleging that Israel wants India to dominate the region. Asif additionally discussed the Indus Waters Treaty, saying that the decades-old agreement cannot be suspended unilaterally. He pointed to the treaty’s dispute resolution mechanisms and mentioned a recent ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration that he claimed favored Pakistan. Meanwhile, General Upendra Dwivedi described “Operation Sindoor” as one of the best examples of India’s use of “smart power.” According to him, the operation successfully combined military force, diplomatic messaging, information management, and economic pressure. He praised the Indian Armed Forces for showing strategic patience and executing the operation with precision, calling it proof of India’s evolving military and strategic capabilities.
