“Defaming a dead woman is wrong”: Priyanka Chaturvedi hits out at Giribala Singh
The death case of Bhopal-based model Twisha Sharma has now turned into a political controversy after comments made by her mother-in-law, retired judge Giribala Singh. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi strongly criticized Giribala Singh’s remarks, accusing her of trying to defame a woman who is no longer alive to defend herself. Priyanka Chaturvedi reacted sharply after a video of Giribala Singh’s press conference surfaced online. Sharing the clip on social media, Priyanka said that if the phrase “woman is the enemy of woman” had a face, it would be Giribala Singh. She also stated that being a retired judge, Giribala Singh understands legal procedures very well and knows how narratives can be shaped publicly in sensitive cases. The controversy began after Giribala Singh spoke to the media about Twisha Sharma’s personal life and behavior before her death. According to her, Twisha had wanted to terminate her pregnancy and had reportedly become emotionally disturbed after learning about it. Giribala claimed that Twisha initially agreed to a Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) procedure but later wanted to stop it after the process had already begun, which was allegedly not possible at that stage. During her media interaction, Giribala Singh further alleged that Twisha behaved independently and often made impulsive decisions. She claimed that Twisha’s husband had been unhappy with her conduct from the beginning and described her mindset as “very liberal.” Giribala also said that the family had supported Twisha throughout the difficult period. However, these remarks triggered criticism from several quarters, especially from Priyanka Chaturvedi, who questioned the morality of publicly discussing the character and personal decisions of a deceased woman. Priyanka argued that such statements could influence public perception unfairly and emotionally damage the victim’s image. She emphasized that no woman should be judged publicly after her death, particularly when she is unable to present her side of the story. The Twisha Sharma death case has continued to attract widespread public and political attention, with debates now extending beyond the investigation itself to issues of women’s dignity, legal influence, and media narratives surrounding sensitive family disputes.
